HMAS Platypus – North Sydney
We are excited to be working with the Sydney Harbour Federation Truston the redevelopment of a former submarine base and torpedo factory in North Sydney. HMAS Platypus has not been accessible by the public in more than 140 years. Iceberg is helping revitalise the area through extensive renovations on defunct buildings that will see them repurposed for a wide range of uses.
Iceberg has been on site since March this year having won the carpentry contract for stage 1 of the project in conjunction with Haslin Constructions. The Harbour Trust oversees the projects ongoing management under the watchful eye of Jemima Manton, from Lahznimmo Architects who is leading the design team.
The project entails the conversion of the old submarine base into green, commercial and public spaces that encompass the history of the navel and industrial past as well as highlighting the existing architectural elements of buildings and surrounds.
Over the past months, Iceberg has overseen all the timber elements that include thousands of metres of ply flooring, balustrading and all the mezzanine structural elements associated with installing approximately 6,000 metres of LVL’s. Not only is there the indoor works but we are also completing all the outdoor furniture elements, awnings, etc.
During our time onsite we have been asked to look at several other aspects of the project based on the quality and attention to detail of completed works. This has led to the bathroom fit-outs and more recently the composite infill paneling around all the external metal balustrading for the public historical walk.
Phase 1 of the project is due for completion soon and now there is the potential to move on to stage 2, as well as the possibility of the internal fit-outs on the commercial suites and café/restaurants for incoming tenants which is exciting being the core of our business.
This has been a great project for Iceberg in many ways. Not only has it added to the scale of our projects, but we have now forged some great relationships with Haslin Constructions, Lahznimmo architects and The Harbour Trust as well.
